It has been over 100 years, since the first Legion of Mary meeting in
Dublin, Ireland, on September 7, 1921. Currently, the Legion of Mary is a
world-wide lay apostolate, in which Catholic men, women and youth sanctify
themselves through prayer and apostolic work in union with our Blessed Mother
Mary. It is estimated that there are about 5 million active and 12
million praying members (auxiliaries) around the world today. It is
perhaps the most successful lay movement in the Church.
The Legion’s purposes are: (1) sanctification of its members accomplished
through prayer and work and (2) to raise the spiritual level of those met
through direct contact. Meetings are held weekly and include recitation
of the Rosary, spiritual readings, a short talk by the Spiritual Director or
President, a discussion of Catholic doctrine and devotion, and a review of each
member’s apostolic work. Some assigned works include: visitation of the
sick, aged and homebound; religious education; Pilgrim Virgin visitation; Enthronement
to the Sacred Heart of Jesus; recitation of the Rosary with those in nursing
homes; and street contact.
Legionaries are under the guidance and approval of our Pastor, Rev. Frank M.
Lubowa. The Legion is in essence an extension of the heart and hands of
the Parish Priests.
